Tips
Choosing and taking care of your Christmas tree
Do you want to get the shiniest, most extraordinary Christmas tree for your holidays? Don’t look any further. Here are some of the best tips that will help you to choose and take care of your Christmas tree.
Selecting a Christmas tree
Make your Christmas tree selection a breeze by following these steps:
- Take measurements. Verify what could be the maximum size of your Christmas tree to make sure it will fit inside the house. Take into consideration the extra space required around the tree for display and accessibility.
- Make sure the Christmas tree is fresh. A good indicator of freshness is the resilience of the needles. Take a hold of one branch between two fingers and pull it towards so that it slips through your fingers. Needles should remain attached to the branch and not fall of into your hand.
- Bend a needle between two fingers. It should be flexible and reach the shape of a “U” without a problem, unless the tree is frozen.
- Lift the tree a few inches from the ground and bring it down rapidly on the stump end. Outside needles should not fall in large amount.
- The Christmas tree should have a rich green color and a noticeable fragrance.
“A fresh Christmas tree will retain its moisture content and thereby keep its fragrance and needles if kept in a stand that has a good water-holding capacity.1“
Caring for your Christmas tree
- If your Christmas tree is already purchased but you have not set up the area where it will stand yet, a good place to store your tree is outside in a cool place, protected from the wind and the sun. This will help your Christmas tree to retain its moisture.
- If the Christmas tree has to be stored for several days, make a straight cut at about an inch from the stump to the end of the tree. This will open the stem and help for water to be absorbed. The tree should be placed upright in a container of water. Be aware that a tree will soak up a lot of water, so be sure to check its water supply on a daily basis.
- When you are ready to install the Christmas tree inside the house, make another straight cut about an inch from the previous one to ensure a good water absorption. Use a tree stand that can hold plenty of water. A 4 litre stand is recommended as trees are extremely thirsty.
- Make sure the water supply of your Christmas tree never reaches lower than the bottom of the tree. In that case, a seal would form, preventing the absorption of new water and another fresh cut would be necessary solve this problem.
- Avoid sources of heat. Your Christmas tree should be placed away from radiators, fireplaces and other sources of heat. Avoid leaving the tree lights turned on when you leave or before you go to bed.
- For your safety, do not use combustible decorations. Also, check all electrical cords. Do not use decorations with worn or frayed cords. Even if you may have heard of the practice back in the day, you must NEVER attempt to put lit candles on a Christmas tree.
If you follow these easy tips, you should be able to keep your Christmas tree enchanting for about 2 or 3 weeks. You will make a good impression on your guests while avoiding unexpected accidents during the holiday season.
Merry Christmas!
