  • An estimated 40 to 45 million Christmas trees have been planted in North America in 2007.
  • Canada, the United States and Germany are amongst world leaders in Christmas tree production.
  • There are more than 20,000 Christmas tree growers in North America.
  • 2,461 farms grew Christmas trees in Canada in 2006. The most Christmas tree farms are found in Ontario, with 725 farms.
  • Amongst those farms, 43% were involved in only one agricultural activity in 2006. Christmas tree farms exhibit the largest proportion of single-product farming, even surpassing maple product farming.
  • The average area of land per farm allocated to growing Christmas trees was 55 acres in 2006. On average, Quebec’s Christmas tree farms are the largest in Canada.
  • On each of the 1 million acres of land for Christmas tree production every year, there are about 2,000 trees from which only 750 to 1,500 will survive to harvesting, depending upon location.
  • Christmas trees take an average of 6 to 10 years to reach maturity for harvest.
  • Christmas trees can be grown on poor soil where other crops won’t grow. They greatly help these areas as they stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide a refuge for wildlife. Christmas tree farming also helps to preserve green spaces.

  • There has been $65 million worth of Christmas trees sold in Canada in 2008, up from $58.6 million in 2007.
  • In 2008, there has been 1.8 million Christmas trees exported from Canada. Most exports went to the United States. The highest number of Christmas tree exports to the United States have been achieved by the province of Quebec with 827,863 trees.
  • All Canadian provinces export Christmas trees, with the exception of Newfoundland, Labrador, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
  • The value of all the exported Christmas trees from Canada in 2008 reaches $34.2 million dollars.
