In an effort to preserve the environment, the B.L. Christmas Trees team has put great efforts into research and refinement of pest management systems. Our Christmas trees are treated following techniques of low-spray and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is the very best long-term approach of pest management. It uses many different control strategies to prevent damaging pest populations and minimize environmental impact.

In addition to that, a great deal of physical work is done on the Christmas trees, such as base pruning, spacing and removing witches brooms (a dense mass of shoots growing from a single point) to help the trees having a better, more efficient growth as well as giving them a more uniform, more dense and generally healthier look, which you could expect from an harvested Christmas tree.

That goes along with Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which consists of releasing ladybugs, parasitic wasps, and hoverflies to control aphids population and therefore, reducing parasite damage to the Christmas trees. Insecticidal soaps are also sprayed on the Christmas trees instead of pesticides to control damage where possible. An insecticidal soap is made of potassium fatty acid and is used on our Christmas trees to help diminish pest population. It disrupts the structure and permeability of the insect cell membranes. This creates a leakage from the insects damaged cells, leading them to a certain death.

Since this method works better on soft-bodied insects such as aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and thrips, to name a few, it is sometimes necessary to use more drastic solutions in order to preserve the health of our Christmas trees when it comes to larger or tougher insects. As an alternative only, we will use pesticides applied at the lowest rates and not on a regular basis. As for herbicides, we spray them on the trees using a low-spray method, avoiding the middle of each row, keeping hays that prevents soil erosion, and eventually increases organic matter of the soil.

Not only can you have the peace of mind knowing that our trees have been treated using the least harmful methods possible, but also that they will be amongst the healthiest and better looking Christmas trees you will have ever seen.
